- Wednesday June 19, 2000, was a red-letter day in the annals of Anjumane Shujaee Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat of Houston. Aliwaqar Shehzada Malek ul Ashtar Dama Majdohu led a delegation from the Houston Jamaat in a cordial and entusiatic meeting with President Bill Clinton of USA. The delegation carried the blessings and good wishes of Al Dai al Mutlaq His Holiness Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin (TUS) Saheb, spiritual leader of the Dawoodi Bohra Muslim Community to the President.
A delegation consisting of Shezada Saheb and six Mumineen from Anjumane Shujaee, Houston met and had lunch with the President. The event was held at the plush Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Houston and was attended by high ranking government officials, community leaders, and leading businessmen. Among the hundred invitees present were many Congressmen, Cabinet Members, Mayors, and CEO s from Fortune 500 companies. Accompanying Shehzada Saheb were Shk. Nooruddin Yamani (in Khidmat of Shehzada Saheb), Shk. Zoher Badri (Aamilsaheb of Houston), Shk. Murtazaali Raja, Shk. Abeezar Shk. Saleh Tyebji, Mulla Aniq Husain, and Mulla Mustafa Tyebbhoy.
In a private meeting before the luncheon, Shezada Aliwaqar presented the President with two books; the first on the life and travels of Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin (TUS) Saheb titled OUR MAN OF THE CENTURY , and the second, a momento published on the occasion of the visit of Prince Charles of England to the London Masjid enumerating the wealth of restorations of Masjids that the Syedna has undertaken. On behalf of the Shehzada Saheb, Momin invited President Clinton to receive His Holiness Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin at the airport, when the Dai would travel to the US in the future. The President said he valued the gifts was enthusiastic in his response about receiving the Dai at the airport.
The President also recognized that a member of the Houston Jamaat, Shk. Abeezar Shk. Saleh Tyebji accompanied him on his most enjoyable trip to India in March 2000. A photo session followed afterwards.
Subsequent to the photo session, a luncheon for the hundred dignitaries was held in the adjacent room. Shezada Aliqadar was seated in a place of honor at the head table with the President. In conversation during lunch, Momin accompanying Shehzada Saheb explained to the President who the Dawoodi Bohras were, and that Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin (TUS) had undertaken the building and subsequent inauguration of many Masjids in the USA. Momin also conveyed that Syedna Dr. Burhanuddin preached living in peace and harmony to his followers, and to be a good citizen in any country they might live in. Momin also conveyed to the President that the Bohras in the USA were professional s and businessmen, and that America was truly a land of opportunity that rendered the freedom to worship, flourish, and prosper.
In a speech following the luncheon, President Clinton enthusiastically acknowledged the diversity in the crowd, alluded that the increasing diversity in the United States should be celebrated in that one should not disparage differences, in fact celebrate the shared humanity in the diversity that America is. He said that America is in essence a land of immigrants and all were welcome to its shores.
He noted that the crowd on hand consisted of all colors and religions, not only a bunch of Texas cowboys as might be expected in Houston. Looking towards Shehzada Saheb from the podium, the President noted for example I admire and welcome the participation of Muslims from South Asia today, and I especially like their attire (Quomi Libaas)&.maybe they are smarter dressed than me for this summer heat . After the speech, the President again shook hands with Shehzada Saheb and thanked him for his kind visit.
The Mumineen of Houston Bajao Shukur na Sajadaat and Araz Tehniyaat in Hazrate Aaliyah Imamiyah Qudsaniyah and Lakho Shukur to Aliwaqar Shehzada Saheb for the opportunity afforded to them to visit a world leader in the personal leadership of Aliwaqar Shehzada Saheb.
May Aqa Moula (TUS) live till Roza Qayamat! Ameen!
